About the region
Croatia as of 2008 has an estimated population of 4,453,500 and covers an area of 56,542 km2. As a Mediterranean and Central European country with an average annual GDP growth of 4% over the last ten years, Croatia is one of the most dynamic transitional countries in this part of Europe. By entering into negotiations for full membership of the EU, Croatia has turned a new page in its history, both in terms of politics and economy.
In statistics, Croatia boasts 114 higher education institutions attended by roughly 136,000 students. As for SMEs, they are an extremely important and certainly the most dynamic segment of Croatian economy. Their share of the total number of companies in Croatia is 99.4% and they account for some 64.3% of the total number of employed persons in Croatia. Additonally, SMEs generate 51.73% of the total assets in the Croatian economy, 40% of the exports and some 44% of Croatian GDP.
